IP Addresses

Every device, Personal Computer, tablet, smartphone, smart TV connected to a network based on Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) uses an IP (Internet Protocol) address to be identified.

An IP address is typically a unique sequence of numbers from 0 to 255 separated by dots, for example: 192.168.1.10. A specific service called DNS (Domain Name System) allows easy-to-remember names like www.mioip.it to be translated into an IP address usable by devices.

The IP address is like a phone number, and the DNS is like the address book.

Knowing your public IP address can be useful for enabling connections from the Internet to your office or home, or for requesting access permissions to remote networks and devices protected by firewalls. It can also help diagnose connection issues or access problems to services. For example, if the public IP is not properly geolocated, access to content restricted to a specific country may be blocked.
